Crappy Vege Meals

So, I'm a vegetarian. I just had a flight Wellington - Sydney on Air NZ, then Melbourne - Wellington on Qantas. So, it's time for a review of the quality of vege meals on these two airlines.

Air New Zealand's vege meal was, in short, awful. The tiniest sliver of lasagne (about 3cm x 1cm), where I couldn't tell what was in the layers as it just looked like a brown mush and had little flavour. Also, a piece of lettuce about the same size and two thin slivers of capsicum. All in all, about 30-40 seconds worth of eating...nowhere near enough for a meal. 2/10 at best.

I didn't think Qantas could possibly be any worse, but I guess I really shouldnt underestimate the ability of airlines to fuck everything up. So, I get to check-in and ask if they've got my vege meal on record (just to double check). Turns out they don't anymore...but it was fine, I was assured, as the person behind the counter rang and sorted a vege meal for the flight while I waited. Excellent! However, when it came time for food on the plane, no vege meal existed for me. On the plus side, they did give me an extra salad and 2 extra bread rolls, making for a total dinner of 2 salads and 3 bread rolls (with margarine!). The salads contained 2 slices of cucumber, 1 cherry tomato (the best part...mmmm) and a small pile of dry, old lettuce. What a filling dinner, thanks Qantas! 1/10 for you.

So, whats the lesson for the future? If you're gonna fly, may as well fly Virgin and use the little money you save to buy a meal on the ground. If you fly Air NZ or Qantas, you'll have to do it anyway.
